Football: Home-grown Thousand Oaks players ready for challenge

In the era of transfers galore, Thousand Oaks is trying to succeed with neighborhood kids. The Lancers had zero transfers last season when they made it to the Northern Division semifinals.

This season, Thousand Oaks moves to the Pac-5 Division, making it an even tougher challenge to succeed.

"We work a lot harder," Coach Mike Leibin said. "The bar has been raised."

Thousand Oaks will get an early test on Friday when it faces Serra League favorite Mission Hills Alemany in a 7 p.m. scrimmage at Thousand Oaks.

The Lancers are excited, because returning are quarterback Clark Abourisk (2,435 yards passing) and running back Nathan DeBeikes (1,313 yards rushing). DeBeikes, a Brigham Young commit, is also to play inside linebacker and has gained 15 pounds.

Beware of junior receiver-defensive back Nick Julier. He has moved up from junior varsity, and Leibin said he thinks Julier can be an impact player.

The Marmonte League has been divided into a Marmonte League West and Marmonte League East. Thousand Oaks is in the Marmonte League West with Oaks Christian, Calabasas, Moorpark and Agoura.

Leibin said he plays with whomever shows up. "I'm proud of how we conduct ourselves and how we run this program," he said.

Football: Crespi's Ray Davison is one tough dude

The easiest prediction for the 2012 football season is that defensive end Ray Davison of Encino Crespi will double or even triple his sack total from a year ago when he had five.

Davison, 6 feet 2, 215 pounds, has made great improvement over the summer. He has eight scholarship offers, and when you see what he can do rushing the passer, it's clear he can cause some major problems. Offensive tackles will have to be on alert and very careful in dealing with him.

"Personally, if I do what I'm supposed to do, I don't feel anybody can really stop me," he said. "It's all mental. It's how I get off the ball, reading what the tackle does and reacting what he gives me."

Crespi opens its season on Saturday on the road against Tuscon (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic.

Football: City Section coaches set for mandatory concussion training

There will be no practice allowed among City Section teams on Monday, Aug. 20, because all football coaches are required to attend a mandatory concussion training program at Bernstein High School from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

It's also a professional development day, so practice would be out anyways. Schools will be allowed to practice on Tuesday that week. Lots of schools are opening their season on Friday, Aug. 24.

The concussion training program was approved by the superintendent's office of the Los Angeles Unified School District, so coaches had better attend the meeting.

Venice will be allowed to schedule a 10th opponent if San Diego Helix can also find a game. The two schools were scheduled to play in a nonleague game but had a communication problem and ended up having to cancel.

Helix has an opening on Sept. 28 and has been unable to find an opponent. Venice has an opponent lined up early in the season if Helix can fill its opening.

Football: Servite sophomores are impressive in scrimmage

Anaheim Servite and Gardena Serra started their scrimmage on Wednesday with a pregame prayer. Players came together to particpate in drills and there were seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 situations.

What's clear is that Servite has an impressive sophomore class.

Receivers Tony Brown and Equanimeous St.-Brown are going to cause trouble for cornerbacks over the next three seasons.

Defensive back Eli Asiata had one of Servite's two interceptions early on. He's a sophomore. And sophomore Jack Savage also saw lots of action at linebacker and tight end.

Neither team spent a lot of time running the ball, which should be a strength. Serra has lots of talented juniors, but the Cavaliers have to work on limiting penalties and turnovers.

Serra opens the season next Friday at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. Servite plays at Bishop Amat.

Todd Therrien, the football coach at Ventura St. Bonaventure, won't be allowed to coach the Seraphs in their season opener against Los Angeles Garfield.

Birmingham football Coach Jim Rose is walking around with a big smile this week, and for good reason. Samson Young, a 6-foot-6, 330-pound sophomore with size 18 shoes, decided to play football and has joined the team as a left tackle.

Rose thinks Young has quite a future.

Young played basketball last season as a freshman. He finally decided to play football and now must make it through 10 practices before being cleared to play.

Rose is convinced he can teach him how to block, and with Young's size and outstanding feet, the Patriots might have a blocker extraordinaire.

Football: Johnny Stanton runs, passes Santa Margarita to victory

Not much has changed in a year's time for top-ranked Santa Margarita. The Eagles still rely on the arm and legs of quarterback Johnny Stanton.

Stanton passed for 206 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles' 27-14 victory over Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday night. The game was nationally televised on ESPN2.

Santa Margarita lost two fumbles and Stanton was intercepted twice, but the Eagles' defense played well, particularly in stopping the run. Santa Margarita's special teams struggled. Brophy got a blocked punt in the fourth quarter that resulted in a touchdown.

Kyle Sweet caught a 26-yard TD pass from Stanton and River Cracraft caught a seven-yard TD pass on a fourth-and-two situation.

Santa Margarita is ranked No. 1 by The Times.
